Many years ago, at the end of an outdoor summer concert with his 7-piece funk band, Das Pintos, Chris met Bill’s wife Allison when she handed him a cold beer. Allison could not stop talking about how great a trumpet player Bill was and how he should invite him to jam with the band. Turns out, Bill is pretty good trumpet player and a fantastic person with a passion for beer. They became great friends, brewed beer together, quit their day jobs and started the Newburyport Brewing Company.
As the first brewery to can our entire line of beers in Massachusetts, we became one of the top 10 fastest growing breweries since prohibition in year one. After four years we are a top 10 brewery in MA and top 250 in the country.

WTF IS YEAT!?
Chris says it when he toasts to his friends. Bill says it when he toasts Chris in a game of foosball. It’s part affirmation, part denial, but 100% Newburyport.
The origins of our hometown battle cry are a bit mythical. If you ask five locals about where “Yeat!” comes from, you might get five different answers. A naval greeting across vessels to identify Newburyport residents? A phrase used by dock workers unloading bread from clipper trade ships? An exclamation of excitement (Yay!)? An inappropriate derogatory statement (nothing we can write here)?
We may never know the true source of the phrase, but since we started making beer, we’ve borrowed it from our local vernacular and made it fun again. Yeat!
